A sudden and steep decline in old newspapers (ONP) has caused several dilemmas, according to three executives representing large-volume recycling companies. At the opening session at the 2011 Paper Recycling Conference held in Chicago in late October, Al Metauro of Toronto-based Cascades Recovery, noted that in one major city in which Cascades operates, ONP has dropped from making up 81 percent of “blue box” post-residential material seven or eight years ago to just 38 percent today

Petcore, Brussels, and the European Plastics Recyclers (EuPR) also headquartered in Brussels, have reported that European post-sorting PET collection reached 1.45 million metric tons in 2010, an increase of 6.5 percent from 2009’s collection figures.

Recyclebank, New York City, has announced the expansion of its partnership with Republic Services, a Phoenix-based waste management and recycling company, to bring its rewards-for-recycling program to the city of East Point, Ga. The expansion plan will add around 9,000 more single-family households to RecycleBank’s program

WM Recycle America , a subsidiary of Houston-based Waste Management, has introduced its WM NYeCycles Service, which the company says has been designed to help electronics manufacturers comply with the State of New York’s Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act . As of April 1, 2011, the New York act mandates manufacturers of certain electronic equipment to establish convenient systems for the collection, handling and recycling or re-use of electronic scrap sold in the state

Waste Management Inc. has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Waste Management Recycle America has acquired two recycling facilities in Virginia and one recycling facility in Maryland from Canusa Hershman Recycling Co. The acquisition includes facilities in Baltimore and Manassas, Va., and a third facility.
