Posted on January 4th, 2012 No commentsRio Tinto Alcan, a London-based global metals firm, is idling 288 of its 432 reduction cells at its Alma smelter in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. At full capacity the aluminum smelter can produce 438,000 metric tons of aluminum per year.

Sims Metal Management to Build Rhode Island Auto Shredder
Posted on October 4th, 2011 No commentsSims Metal Management (SMM) has been in discussions with the City of Johnston, R.I., to build a scrap metal facility in the city. The new facility would include an auto shredder. Several reports note the company could spend $30 million on the facility.

Continental Waste Management Plans to Open Plastics Recycling Facility in Virginia
Posted on March 14th, 2011 No commentsVirginia Governor Bob McDonnell has announced that Continental Waste Management LLC, based in Raleigh, N.C., is investing $6 million to establish a post-industrial and post-consumer plastic recycling plant in Covington, Va. The company also will produce plastic/wood composite products at the facility.

Nucor Breaks Ground on Louisiana Project

The company notes that it received its air permit from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality in January after meeting all of the standards ensuring the facility will comply with state and federal environmental controls.

Maine City Nears Decision on Proposed Auto Shredder
Posted on March 3rd, 2011 No comments*** Update*** The Planning Board unanimously approved the conditional use permit for Berwick Iron & Metal. The permit imposes 11 conditions that the company must meet before the shredder can be operated. Several conditions include the following: the facility obtaining a solid waste processing license from the state of Maine; the inclusion of signs near the facility instructing truck drivers to no stop to prevent traffic backups; and the inclusion of an entrance modification permit from the Maine Department of Transportation.l The Berwick, Maine, Planning Board is slated to hold a meeting March 3 to decide whether or not to grant a conditional use permit to Berwick Iron & Metal to operate an auto shredder at its scrap metal site at its facility in the city
