Reminder: FTC Will Enforce Red Flags Rule Beginning November 1 (but Federal Judge Rules Lawyers Not Subject To Rule)
Posted on October 30th, 2009 No commentsThe Federal Trade Commission will begin enforcing its Red Flags Rule this Sunday, November 1. Financial institutions and creditors that hold covered accounts, as defined under the Rule, must have written Red Flags identity theft prevention programs in place by November 1.

House adopts CLASS Act; "red flags" rule bill stalls in Senate committee
Posted on October 30th, 2009 No commentsA bill that would exempt certain healthcare facilities from the “red flags” rule has been met with stony silence from the Senate. After sailing through the House, the exemptions bill was sent to the Senate Banking Committee, where members have yet to move on the issue.

Posted on October 21st, 2009 No commentsThe HIT Policy Advisory Committee’s information exchange workgroup learned Tuesday just how difficult it’s going to be for doctors to exchange electronic lab results to qualify for federal “meaningful use” bonuses. Physicians can earn a potential $44,000 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), beginning Oct. 1, 2011, but they will have to show meaningful use of data, including the use of electronic laboratory results.

Posted on September 18th, 2009 No commentsWhatever tools an identity thief is using, whether Dumpster diving for individual credit card numbers, or stealing identities by the millions — “the damage that you can do to someone is exactly the same,” said Wayne Ivey, a Florida law enforcement officer who has specialized in identity theft investigations for more than 15 years. But this rapidly evolving crime is becoming more difficult to stop, Ivey said: Only one in 700 identity thieves is ever arrested.
