Notification Rule on HIPAA Data Breach Effective Soon

Indiana ID theft law gets added bite
Posted on September 17th, 2009 No commentsThe new state law increases the penalties for database owners who discard consumers’ personal data, such as Social Security numbers, in a way that could subject them to identity theft. Database owners could face a fine of $5,000 per incident and are required to notify the attorney general’s office, as well as consumers, if a security breach occurs.

This news was revealed by CEO Bob Carr in Heartland’s recent earnings call, wherein Carr said the much-publicized breach has already cost the company $12.5 million.
