The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has announced the availability of $3.2 million in funding to assist local governments, businesses and other public and private sector entities improve their recycling efforts. The recycling programs are funded through the state’s Solid Waste Management fund, which is a dedicated funding source that is supported by a surcharge on garbage being landfilled in Illinois. “Recycling used materials can create six to 10 times more jobs as opposed to discarding them in a landfill,” says Warren Ribley, director of Illinois’ DCEO.

Hhs’ Ig plans audits for some health IT programs

Health IT advocates on Capitol Hill Tuesday pledged to keep pushing for IT measures in healthcare reform and other pending legislation, despite the commitment already included in the economic stimulus package. At a briefing, lawmakers said that even with health IT provisions in the stimulus and reform bills, they want to be sure that funding continues to be available.

The Department of Health and Human Services issued new regulations Wednesday requiring healthcare providers, health plans and other entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to notify patients if their electronic health information has been breached.
