Common Ground
Posted on December 14th, 2011 No commentsElectronics recyclers do not generally have to look far to find e-mails in their inboxes or news coverage accentuating the differences that can exist within their industry. Between competing certification systems, differing views on exporting re-usable electronics or contrasting cost-benefit analyses on dismantling versus shredding, the differences are documented on a steady basis.

World Recycling Forum: The Drive Ahead
Posted on November 22nd, 2011 No commentsWhen oil prices spiked, some futurists predicted hybrid and electric vehicles would soon skyrocket in market share. While some hybrid models have met sales expectations, the appetite for electric vehicles remains limited, according to Anja Tomazic of Germany-based Adam Opel AG, a unit of General Motors. Speaking during a session of the World Recycling Forum, held in Hong Kong in mid-November, Tomazic said of electric-only vehicles, “We don’t see 20 percent market penetration in 2020; I don’t think we’re getting ahead of slow single-digit [percentage] growth figures.” She added, “Electric vehicles are still viewed as expensive.” As of 2011, automated technology to disassemble or recycle the lithium ion batteries that power the Opel Ampera and Insignia (or Chevrolet Volt in the United States) “is not necessary,” said Tomazic, because of the limited presence of the batteries at dismantling and auto salvage yards.

World Recycling Forum: Powered by Incentives
Posted on November 18th, 2011 No commentsLaws and regulations can help divert obsolete materials from the landfill or prohibit materials from being exported, but Jon Yob of Creative Recycling, Tampa, Fla., says legislators and policy makers should understand one truth above all others: “That which gets rewarded gets done.” Electronics recycler Yob was part of a panel discussion moderated by freelance journalist Adam Minter at the World Recycling Forum, held in Hong Kong in mid-November. Yob was joined by former scrap company owner Stephen Greer, now with Oaktree Capital; Michel Dubois of Luxembourg-based scrap company Recylux Group; and Professor Li Jinhui of Tsinghua University in Beijing. The members of the panel offered their observations on how their industry is evolving in China and the rest of the world.

Paper Recycling Conference: Less News, Less Quality?
Posted on November 10th, 2011 No commentsA sudden and steep decline in old newspapers (ONP) has caused several dilemmas, according to three executives representing large-volume recycling companies. At the opening session at the 2011 Paper Recycling Conference held in Chicago in late October, Al Metauro of Toronto-based Cascades Recovery, noted that in one major city in which Cascades operates, ONP has dropped from making up 81 percent of “blue box” post-residential material seven or eight years ago to just 38 percent today
