Republic Steel has announced plans to build an electric arc furnace and associated equipment at its steelmaking plant in Lorain, Ohio. The company will spend $85.2 million on the EAF project. According to Republic, headquartered in Canton, Ohio, the decision to build the EAF is due to strong demand for the company’s special bar quality (SBQ) steel.

Global Scrap Management (GSM), Milford, Ohio, has announced plans to open an aluminum ingot production facility in Batavia, Ohio. The company says that its new division, known as Altimet, will install new melt technology that will allow the company to provide higher yields and reduce the cost of transforming scrap into aluminum ingots. GSM, founded in 2003, specializes in processing industrial aluminum machining scrap, including turnings.

Closed Loop Recycling , which says it is the first company in the world to recycle both PET and HDPE plastic bottles into food-grade material for new food and drink packaging, has announced plans to expand the company’s Dagenham, U.K., plant to 60,000 metric tons per year.
