BOCA RATON, Fla.– Identity theft remains a growing issue nationwide and here in South Florida. Experts say the reality is… you are never 100 percent safe from thieves.
But there is one major thing you can do to protect yourself–and that’s shredding important documents. The Boca Raton Police Department is teaming up with a company out of Miami called MicroShred. They are hosting a free shredding day this Saturday, January 26th for the public to bring up to five bankers sized boxes to shred.
The company will bring their dump truck sized shredder and will even destroy computer hard drives as well. Pieces of paper like credit card statements and other bills hold important and private information that needs to be destroyed properly to protect yourself.

Boca Raton, FL – On Saturday, January 26, 2013, the Boca Raton Police Services Department and Microshred Corporation are partnering to host a free shredding event. The event will take place from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Town Center Mall, 6000 West Glades Road, in the northwest corner of the Sears parking lot.
The event is only open to residential households and a maximum of five banker’s sized boxes are allowed per household. Microshred will have document shredding trucks on site and as an added service to residents they will destroy their computer hard drive(s). There will be a $10 fee for each hard drive destroyed that must be paid to Microshred. The hard drive must be removed from the computer prior to arrival.
Officers from the BRPD’s Crime Prevention Unit along with employees from Microshred will be on site to provide expert advice and tips for identity theft prevention. “In 2010, 7.0% of households in the United States, or about 8.6 million households, had at least one member age 12 or older who experienced one or more types of identity theft victimization” (U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief November 2011).
Shredding documents is a key step in identity theft prevention. Residents are encouraged to purchase a quality cross cut shredder and to shred all documents that contain any personal information. For additional information contact the Boca Raton Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at 561-347-3938 or visit our website at www.BocaPolice.com.
